We love panto here at Kids Theatre Up North, it is the perfect place to introduce children to the wonders of theatre without the worry of having to keep them from fidgeting or singing along , after all in panto land singing and dancing along is usually highly encouraged!
So we were excited to pop along to Southport Theatre for Imagine Theatre’s production of Snow White.
Everyone knows the traditional tale of Snow White but as usual Panto’s do this with a slight twist and a whole lot of festive silliness.
Alistair Barron did a sterling job as Jester Jingles and raised plenty of laughs from the audience providing that slapstick comedy and silly humour which small children adore as he tried and failed to win the hand of Harriet Payne as Snow White. Jason Marc-Williams held duties as the dame with the duo being joined on stage by Prince Michael (James Leeman) for an alternative version of the 12 Days of Christmas which brought much hilarity (and flying objects) to the young audience.
Home and Away’s Lynne McGranger was delightfully wicked as the evil Queen while not being utterly terrifying so that even the smallest of audience members had the confidence to boo each time she appeared.
The biggest cheer of the night of course came for Children’s legend Justin Fletcher aka Mr Tumble who appears as the face of the magic mirror via video projection. Fears that the children would be disappointed that Justin was not there in person were soon allayed. It was well done and I am not sure they even realised.
We do feel they missed a trick with the seven dwarves. While they did a wonderful job it would have been lovely to strip back the costumes somewhat and get some of the super talented local children involved in this role to better effect.
With modern day twists on a traditional tale and pop songs to get everybody up and out of their seats the children had a fantastic time and laughed and clapped throughout.
If you are expecting West End staging and a live orchestra this may not be for you but if you are looking for a perfect way to kick off the Christmas season for the children go see it.
The show runs until December 31 and tickets can be booked by calling 0844 871 3021 or going to www.atgtickets.com/southport.
